How to Compare Trucking Job Offers the Right Way
A practical checklist for comparing CDL job offers: weekly gross, real hourly pay, paid weeks, home time, equipment and how pay is calculated.
A bigger number on a recruiting ad doesn't always mean more money per hour or per year. Here's a checklist.
1. Weekly gross — and how it's calculated
Is it a fixed weekly amount, mileage-based, or percentage of load? Is it an average or a minimum? Get it in writing.
2. Hours you'll actually work
Ask about typical on-duty hours, wait times and loading duties. Without hours, you can't compare hourly pay.
3. Paid weeks per year
$2,100 per week over 50 paid weeks is $105,000. Over 52 weeks it's $109,200.
4. Home time and nights away
Nights away have real value to you and your family — weigh them alongside the money.
5. Deductions and benefits
Health insurance premiums and other deductions can differ significantly between employers.
