Owner-operator guide

Trucking Fuel Cost Calculator

Fuel is usually one of the biggest costs for an owner-operator. The math is simple — and getting it right matters for every other number.

The fuel cost formula

Gallons used = miles driven ÷ MPG. Fuel cost = gallons × average price per gallon. Fuel cost per mile = price per gallon ÷ MPG.

Use total miles — loaded and empty — and the price you actually pay after fuel card discounts.

Estimate vs. actual fuel spend

If you track fuel purchases, your actual spend is more accurate than an MPG estimate. Use one or the other — never add both, or fuel gets counted twice. Our calculator only uses the method you choose.

Fuel surcharge isn't a cost

Fuel surcharge you're paid is revenue. Include it in gross revenue, and count what you spend at the pump as the fuel expense.

Worked example

Miles per week3,000
Average MPG6.5
Gallons used: 3,000 ÷ 6.5461.54 gal
Diesel price$3.80/gal
Weekly fuel cost: 461.54 × $3.80$1,753.85
Fuel cost per mile: $3.80 ÷ 6.5$0.585

Illustrative numbers. Diesel prices change constantly — use your own average.

FAQ

What MPG should I use?

Use your own average from fuel receipts and odometer or ELD miles over several weeks, not the truck's advertised rating.

Does idling count?

Idling burns fuel without adding miles, which lowers your real MPG. Using actual fuel purchases captures it automatically.
